So I asked myself what would my five year old son like in a menu for Linux? Thus came about the idea to use an over sized Home Icon as the menu background, while using Icons orientated towards children using them.
The design is simplistic on purpose. Kids can get easily overwhelmed by bells and whistles making it hard to use the menu. So I made it minimalistic. However, it still has stuff no child should be using (synaptic, control panel, terminal) simply because they shouldn't have access to those features in a direct manner. (Their account should also not allow access to root level functions, which synaptic certainly is, among others.)
Also realistically a 5 year old isn't going to be cruising the local network (they shouldn't be for sure)
So yes there is more work to be done on this interface but its a start point.
